Yesterday,
12th of August, 2015, a massive demolition of houses at Jikwoyi, phase
one area of FCT by men of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), left many
residents
homeless and desolate.
The demolition
which was carried out in the early hours of 10:00 am didn’t give many of the
residents the opportunity to carry out their belongings out of their respective
houses as military men heavily armed with guns were employed to threatening people
from getting close.
An eye
witness said that AMAC are to be blamed for the inhumane act as the area was
marked for demolition just two weeks ago without the actual date of carrying
out the exercise. The eye witness further disclosed to National Lifewatch
reporters that the same incident occurred in 2002 and they came up with a
solution that lasted until the recent incident.
A pathetic sight was the endless tears of a 55 year- old man
who completed his four bedroom apartment a day before the demolition.
The community leaders have sent a delegation
to the senate to report the matter to the senate committee on housing and
environment.
The delegated
body has also sent letters to the Nigeria Army and police force Abuja divisions
questioning why it allowed it men to be used to intimidate civilians.
Furthermore,
the affected persons have drag AMAC to court over the ill demolition.
