Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar yesterday described the
late matriarch of Awolowo family, Chief Hannnah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo as the best first lady Nigeria never had.
He also said the late sage and premier of the old western region,
Chief Obafemi Awolowo owed his successes in life largely to the
contributions of the late matriarch.
Abubakar spoke at the launch of the biography of HID at the Ikenne,
Ogun State country-home of the Awolowos where other prominent Nigerians,
including former governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, who was
represented by Managing Director of New Telegraph Newspapers,
Mrs. Funke Egbemode, former speaker of the House of Representatives,
Dimeji Bankole, juju music maestro, Commander Ebenezer Obey- Fabiyi
attended and donated various sums of money to support the book.
Atiku, who was the chief presenter at the biography launch, entitled:
“In the Radiance of the Sage: The Life and Times of HID Awolowo,”
written by Prof. Wale Adebanwi said the late matriarch was the
quintessential first lady the country never had the opportunity to have.
He equally noted how the matriarch of the Awolowo family stood
solidly behind her husband and together they weathered the storms and
confronted the vicissitudes of life.
