Rivers State Government, yesterday, failed to mark the 55th Independence Day anniversary. Governor Nyesom Wike, had earlier said the celebration would be low-keyed.
The reason given by Wike, who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Kenneth Kobani, was that, government was yet to offset debts it inherited from former governor, Chibuike Amaechi’s administration, particularly school fees of indigent Rivers students studying abroad.
When Daily Sun visited the Liberation Stadium, Elekahia, Isaac Boro Park and Alfred Diete Spiff Civic Centre, all in Port Harcourt, to ascertain the level of celebration, there was no indication that the Independence Day was was marked, quite unlike past years.
Instead, the common scene at the Liberation Stadium and Civic Centre was sports men and women busy with training.
Meanwhile, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has tasked politicians to deliver on their electioneering promises.
Chairman of TUC in Rivers State, Chika Onuegbu, in his reaction to the non-celebration of October 1, by the state government, said recession in the economy could be a reason.
Onuegbu said further that it appeared people were not enthusiastic about the anniversary, probably because of failure of the politicians to deliver.
