Ahead of the
November local government election in Enugu State, the All Progressives
Congress (APC) in the state has called on Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to dissolve
the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC).
The party made the call yesterday in a statement signed by its state Publicity
Secretary, Mrs. Kate Ofor. It said the antecedents of ENSIEC as presently
constituted and chaired by Dr. Bony Eneh had failed to uphold the people’s will
as evidenced in previous local council elections, insisting that the body has
not been an independent arbiter.
“APC will head to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other
relevant anti-graft agencies if His Excellency, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi ignores
our allegations and goes ahead to organise the local council elections with
tainted umpire,” the party said.
The party, which is the major opposition party in the state lamented that
barely few months to the expected local government election, the commission has
neither given account of the conduct of the last local council election nor
come up with any programme with regards to the conduct of a credible free and
fair election.
The party, therefore, “expressed fears that the commission would conduct an
election where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win all the seats
ranging from councilors to local government chairmen,” describing the situation
as less than transparent tactics, which would lead into PDP’s game of selection
instead of election.
The party recalled that a committee comprising five commissioners was set up to
find out how the 2011 local government election was planned and executed in the
state, alleging that the report of the committee indicted the chairman and
recommended some sanctions on some other people indicted in the report.
When contacted, Governor Ugwuanyi’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Uwakwe Abugu, said the opposition party should try and get its acts right than to be preoccupied in dictating to the governor how to carry out his statutory functions.
