Only Jonathan's Government will be probed — Presidency

The Muhammadu Buhari administration will restrict its probe of past government officials to that of the immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

In effect, the new government will not spread its dragnet to those of the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdulsalami Abubakar and others.

This position was disclosed on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media, Femi Adesina, in an interview he granted Lagos State-based Channels Television.

According to Adesina, the Buhari administration will be over-reaching itself and resources if it stretches anti-corruption investigations beyond the immediate past government.

His words: “It would be a distraction for the President to begin digging into all former administrations but for a proper take-off of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, there is the need to look into the immediate past government.”

Adesina added, however, that the investigation would not be a witch-hunt of the immediate past government, because the government’s interest is in the return of Nigeria’s looted funds.
